At the January 20th meeting of the FoL, members approved a change to simplify the Membership year such that it coincides with the calendar year rather than FoL’s fiscal year (June-May).

Most members will need to RENEW MEMBERSHIP DUES NOW, as the change in dues is effective immediately.  Exception:  if you paid dues at the October 2010 annual book sale, or after that date, your dues are “grandfathered” in and expire Dec. 31, 2011.

Remember:

  • FOL members receive discounts at our used book store, early shopping privileges at annual book sales, and other benefits.
  • FoL is supported entirely from membership dues, contributions and fundraising events.   In the past four years FOL has donated more than $65,000 in equipment and services to the Hood County Public Library.

You can join or renew your dues here, online.  Or, you can download the membership form, print, and mail it along with your check for dues.

FoL is pleased to announce recent additions to our Executive Committee: two new Committee Chairs.

Long-time Granbury resident and retired business person Gail Lowe has accepted the post of Volunteer Coordinating Committee Chair.  A new Committee, recently formed, the Volunteer Coordinating Committee organizes Volunteers for activities throughout the year and helps with appropriate trainings for Volunteers. The Volunteer Coordinating Committee will annually present to the Board a report of the success of Volunteer activities during the past year and make recommendations for recruiting, maintaining, and improving the participation of Fol Volunteers each year. The Volunteer Coordinating Committee Chair may create sub-committees as needed to manage specific Volunteer Coordination tasks or events.

Dr. Jennifer T. Edwards, an Assistant Professor of Communications at Tarleton University, has accepted the Post of FoL Scholarship Committee Chair. The FoL Scholarship fund assists Hood County students enrolled in a University program leading to a graduate degree in library arts or sciences.

Board Nominations for the current FY are ongoing to fill vacant and interim posts. All members in good-standing may be considered for an Officer or Committee position. Self-nomination is deemed a leadership quality and, as such, is appreciated and welcomed. Nominations should be submitted to Nominating Chair Char Hitz. Nominations are currently being sought for the following posts:

First Vice-President

Recording Secretary

At a recent FoL Board meeting, Char Hitz was named by outgoing President Jeanell Morris to Chair this year’s Nominating Committee to draw-up a slate of Nominees for election to the 2010-11 FoL Board of Directors. Once elected, incoming Board Officers will begin their terms of Office in June 2010.

Serving as an Officer of the Board is one of the best ways to contribute to the FoL organization and the Library. The Nominating Committee seeks nominations for all Officer posts. Self-nomination is appreciated and welcomed. Nominations should be submitted to Char Hitz no later than April 1, 2010.

The Books for Babies Program, a national literacy program offered through the American Library Assocation’s Association of Library Trustees, Advocates, Friends, and Foundations (ALTAFF), aims to acquaint parents with the important role reading plays in the development of their children. So, the program starts them off early. In fact, at birth!

Barbara Althouse, FoL Chair of the local Books for Babies program, recently received this warm thanks from one of Granbury’s new Moms.
