Our History
Originally formed in the mid-1960s, the Friends of the Library for Hood County began as an advocacy group to promote passage of a local referendum establishing the first public library in the Hood County area in 1968.

Since that date, the organization has continued to advocate and cultivate public and private support for our library and to promote volunteerism in our community.  In the last four years, the organization has provided more than $75k in funding to support children’s programming; building maintenance, remodeling and improvement; and special title acquisitions in support of our library and the services it provides.

Our Activities
The Friends of the Library engage in a number of activities in support of the Hood County Library. These activities include sponsorship of displays, speakers, book reviews, childrens’ programs, film programs, book drives, book fairs, etc.  We also make available tuition scholarships for local residents pursuing professional education in librarianship.

As appropriate, the organization can act as a fiscal agent to receive gifts, donations, grants, and other moneys for enhancing the Library.

One of our primary goals is to develop a better public understanding of  libraries and the vital role that your Library plays in today’s living. Toward this end, we encourage an appreciation of reading for personal enjoyment and for research and information purposes among people young and old.

Kathleen Johnson passed away July 1st at the Harbor Lakes Nursing and Rehab Center. Kathleen was instrumental in the reorganization of the Friends of the Library for Hood County in 1997, serving as the first President of the newly reorganized group. The Friends of the Library honored her with a Life Membership in 2007. Kathleen’s efforts created a strong support group for our Library, so she will be greatly missed.

Her obituary, published in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram on 7/22/09, asked that memorials be made in the form of donations to the Friends of the Library for Hood County. Memorial donations in Kathleen’s name may be sent to the Friends of the Library at 222 North Travis Street, Granbury, Texas 76048. These memorial donations will be used to purchase a needed item for the Library.
