The Book Sale Committee is busy as a one-armed paper hanger as we prepare for the Grand Opening this spring of our used bookstore in the library. So much to do: signage, organizing books by topic, shelving, pricing. Many thanks to Courtney Kincaid, interim Library Director, and the library staff for working with us on this big project.
QUESTIONS:
WHERE: In the “old” library area off the meeting room on the Travis St. side of the library
HOURS: Three times a week, fours hours each time (TBA), including some evenings and Saturdays also.
WHAT: Great selections of current fiction, nonfiction and other media, bargain books, and a children’s section. We will have something for everyone.
FOL MEMBERS will get special discounts. ANNUAL BOOK SALES will continue; a benefit of FOL membership is early shopping privileges at these events.
Thanks go out to our Friends’ Members and other shoppers for another great Semi-annual Fall Book Sake in October, 2010. Special thanks go to all the special Friends Volunteers who never fail to help us make each sale a big success. We all enjoy the sight of people browsing books to find just the right “reads” for the upcoming winter season.
Speaking of winter, we’re entering the Christmas shopping season! Our weekly Wagon Wednesday sales have resumed. Members and non-members alike can shop our “mini” book sale held in the Library foyer each Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. Wagon Wednesday sales feature “like new” hard and soft cover books from popular fiction authors, non-fiction books, and children’s books as well as Music CDs, Video Tapes, DVDs, and Books on Tape.

The FoL Spring ’10 Book Sale was a huge success. This Spring’s event brought in almost $10k in sales and around $2k in memberships. Thank you, FoL Members and Shoppers!
Congratulations to a spectacular Book Sale Volunteer crew! We had an amazing number of FoL Volunteers helping with the set-up process. We think we may have had the greatest number of books ever, and everyone just went to work and got them all sorted with smiles on their faces. 2010 Spring Book Sale
Five years ago, my husband Ray and I decided to retire and leave California, where we had lived for years. We were heading to a quiet life on a farm in Arkansas when our oldest son suggested we might like lake life instead and to look at Granbury. We did look. Coming from the “big city life”, this was just what we wanted and stayed. Ray and I have raised 5 boys between us and are proud grandparents of six. While most of our family still lives in California, we are working on them to come to Texas.
We had many interests to take into retirement. I’ve been interested in calligraphy since working with the 1984 Olympics as a calligrapher. Other of my interests include Chinese brush painting, quilting, cross stitch, and working jigsaw puzzles. Ray enjoys motorcycles and building hot rods. Together we have kept some unusual animals, such as tarantulas, ferrets, falcons and hawks, a couple of Great Danes, and were beekeepers for seven years. Since moving to Granbury, we enjoy the simple life, he with his “classic” motorcycles and me with my puzzles and quilting.
I got involved with the Friends of the Library for Hood County three years ago. I started with a book sale, just lending a hand. Then I found myself organizing books for the children’s section and now I’ve added sections for textbooks and home schooling. I met and became friends with Sandra Tarver, another volunteer who works with “collectibles” and the Wagon Wednesday Book Sale books, so I now help out with those tasks, as well. I also volunteer in the Library, helping Assistant Librarian Samantha Smith with Interlibrary loans and Cataloger Cindy Lincoln with maintenance of books yet to be shelved.
Why do I enjoy FoL volunteering so much? Not just because I love books, but because I love people and being a part of something special: reading and being involved in helping others who love reading as much as I do!
We are in need of Wagon Wednesday helpers for the Wagon Wednesday mini Book Sales. Two people are needed each time, one to run the cart and one to assist. Wagon Wednesday sales run from 10:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., held in the Library foyer. New volunteers will be paired with experienced volunteers.
If you are available, please login to the Members Only area to place your name on a date, or email our Booksale Chair.
